Summary:

Covenant of God, the garden of Eden.

The covenant for Adam and Eve was to eat of the tree of life and live in the garden of Eden forever.

Adam could dress and keep it anyway he liked with one condition.

The condition God commanded was to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

They ate.

Adam lived to be nine hundred thirty years old, then Adam died.

[3] And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Genesis 2:8-9 KJV
[8] And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. Genesis 2:15 KJV

Genesis 3:6-7 KJV
[6] And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. [7] And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

Genesis 3:11 KJV
[11] And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

Genesis 3:17 KJV
[17] And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

Genesis 3:22-24 KJV
[22] And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: [23] Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. [24] So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Matthew 7:21-23 KJV
[21] Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. [22] Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? [23] And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

2 Peter 3:8 KJV
[8] But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

Commentary

The covenant was to live in the garden of Eden forever.

They could eat of any tree of the garden except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
God "commanded" them to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

They could eat of the tree of life and live forever.
The covenant was life or death.

The eating of the tree was not the cause of the death for Adam.
The cause of the death for Adam was his disobedience to God.
